CODE OF ETHICS

The aim of the Association Of Stringed Instrument Artisans is to
cultivate professionalism and integrity to the field of stringed
instrument making and repair. Therefore, as a member of A.S.I.A. I
subscribe to the following code of ethical behaviour:

I will honour my craft by continually striving towards the refinement
of my skills, the broadening of my knowledge, the improvement of my
services, and when and where it is appropriate, generously sharing my
knowledge with others.

I will compete fairly and honourably with colleagues by not
denigrating their skills or achievements, or otherwise interfering
with their client relationships. Rather, I will work with them to
foster charitable and collegial relationships.

I will undertake only those tasks or commissions which are within my
level of skill to complete. I will not misrepresent or overstate my
level of competence.

I will honour my contractual agreements and warranties, whether
expressed verbally or in writing.

I will treat my customers fairly, without regard to their own
achievements or the value of their instruments.

I will spare no effort resolving disputes which may arise between
myself and my customer.   To that end, I will grant my customer the
benefit of any doubt whenever I am approached with reciprocally
constructive and genuine intentions.

I don't know what the fudge phrase "when and where it is appropriate" is
supposed to mean.

I don't think that it is unethical to honestly point out deficiencies in
another's work, although it is usually politically unwise.

Agreed. I feel it's time to roll out a John Clute quote (a well-respected voice in SF litcrit), because although he's talking about honesty in reviewing, I think it applies to more areas of life:

"reviewers who will not tell the truth are like cholesterol "[...] Perhaps we should establish a Protocol of Excessive Candour, a convention within the community that excesses of intramural harshness are less damaging than the hypocrisies of stroke therapy, that telling the truth is a way of expressing love."

Ahhhh.... come on.... we have all run across the kind of people who if you are not careful will attach themselves to you and suck all the productivity out of you.   

I think all he is saying is there is a time and a place for the sharing of knowledge to take place.

It seems like prudence to me -- being gracious and willing to share, just not to his own detriment.

Grit is a huge inspiration to me. I had the honor of meeting the man at A.S.I..A a few years ago. His presence is in all of my more recent inlays.

In the introductory paragraph, I typed "...integrity to the field of..."
It should be "...integrity in the field of..."
